Understanding the Scouting Organization
Worldwide Scouting
Worldwide scouting, or the Scout Movement, is a global educational youth program that builds character and teaches practical outdoor, leadership, and citizenship skills. It unites over 60 million young people and volunteers across more than 170 countries, all connected by shared foundational promises, laws, and the iconic "Scout method" of learning by doing.
National
The National Council is the central governing body of Scouting America. It establishes program standards, develops advancement requirements, oversees the national high-adventure bases, and provides the policies and resources that support Scouting across the country.
National Service Territory (NST)
The United States is divided into 16 National Service Territories (NSTs). These territories provide guidance, training, and support to local councils, helping ensure quality Scouting programs nationwide.
Council
A Council administers the Scouting program throughout a specific geographic region by providing camping opportunities, training, events, and support to local units. Pack 117 is part of the Blue Mountain Council.
District
A District is a smaller geographic division within a council that provides direct support to local Scout units. Pack 117 belongs to the Three Rivers District, which serves Southeastern Washington and Northeastern Oregon.
Charter Organization
Every Cub Scout Pack is sponsored by a Charter Organization. The Charter Organization approves adult leadership, provides a meeting location, and partners with the pack to deliver the Scouting program. Pack 117 is proudly chartered by the Kennewick Church of the Nazarene.
Pack Committee
The Pack Committee is a team of registered adult volunteers who work behind the scenes to ensure the pack operates successfully. They handle planning, finances, membership, advancement, fundraising, equipment, and other administrative responsibilities that keep the program running smoothly.
Cubmaster
The Cubmaster is the primary leader of the pack. They lead Pack Meetings, work with den leaders, encourage Scouts, and help create fun, engaging experiences for all Cub Scout families.
Den Leaders & Assistant Den Leaders
Den Leaders and Assistant Den Leaders are dedicated volunteers who plan and lead den meetings for Scouts in their assigned grade level. They help Scouts complete adventures, develop new skills, build friendships, and have fun while growing through the Cub Scout program.
